Catholic nun releases reprise of Madonna's 'Like a Virgin'

Sung by Sister Cristina Scuccia, an Italian nun, who has been a singing sensation since she appeared on The Voice: Italy this year, 'Like a Virgin' is not perhaps a conventional choice.

However, it hardly resembles the provocative 1984 hit as sung by Madonna Ciccione: the pop star from Michigan who tittlated audiences for decades with her banal lyrics and occasional bouts of nudity.

In the original clip that was played widely by MTV in the 1980s, singer Madonna was seen sporting a wedding dress while writing and lip-synching her way through the historic plazas and canals of romantic Venice. She is accompanied by a male dancer dressed as a lion.

In the case of the Sicilian-born Sister Cristina, the song takes a religious tone and is sung like a paean or hymn. Sister Cristina is seen her video in Venice too, but we are treated instead to beautiful views of the St Mark's Basilica, la Giudecca, and other scenes in the city by the sea.

“I chose it myself, without any desire to provoke or cause a scandal,” Sister Cristina told Avvenire, a Catholic newspaper. “By reading the text, without letting yourself be influenced by previous [interpretations], you discover that it is a song about the ability of love to renew people, to redeem them from their past. And that’s how I wanted to interpret it.

“That’s why we transformed the pop-dance track that it was into a romantic ballad a bit like Amos Lee, more like a secular prayer than a pop song.”

'Like a Virgin' will be featured on an album to be released by Universal on November 11th. Called 'Sister Cristina,' the album will feature ten pop covers including Keane’s 'Somewhere Only We Know,' Coldplay’s 'Fix You,' Alicia Keys’ 'No One,' Cyndi Lauper’s 'True Colors' and Jessie J’s 'Price Tag.'

Since Sister Cristina won the Italian talent competition in June, her songs have clocked up over 100 million views on YouTube. Audiences have loved her renditions of songs like 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' and 'Time of My Life' from the film Dirty Dancing.
